COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Head coach Missy Meharg was honored at the NFHCA Convention in Naples, Fla. Friday for reaching 500 career wins and for being named NFHCA Regional Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic region.
Meharg celebrated with former Terrapins, who are now coaches at different levels, including Dina Rizzo (Associate Head Coach, Maryland), Carla Tagliente (Head Coach, Massachusetts), Meredith Long Civico (Head Coach, Rutgers), Megan Callahan Fraser (Head Coach, Johns Hopkins), Kristina Edmonds (Owner and Head Coach, Texas Pride Club), Jackie Ciconte (Head Coach, The Kinkaid School), Tara Zollinger (Assistant Coach, Syracuse), Katie Gerzabek (Assistant Coach, Temple) and current assistant coach and technical director Joppe de Vries.
"What a team of talented Terps," Meharg said. "As we continue our relationships as friends and colleagues I get why we were together in the first place. Thank you Dina, Carla, Meredith, Megan, Tina, Jackie, Tara and Kate. You are great coaches now and there would never have been 500 wins without each of you."
This is the second straight year Meharg was named both Regional and Big Ten Coach of the Year. She has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year nine times and Conference Coach of the Year honors nine times as well.
Meharg led the Terrapins to a 19-4 record this season, sweeping the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. They made the program's 21st straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season, marking the longest current active streak in the country.
Meharg also became the fourth coach in Division I history to reach the 500-win plateau in October. Her current record of 509-123-9 holds a winning percentage of 80.1 percent, which leads all active Division I coaches.
Dina Rizzo (Associate Head Coach, Maryland):
"Missy is the best of the best and I am honored to have played for her and now coach alongside of her. She is the heart and soul of this program and has built a tradition of excellence not only on the field but for her athletes to be better people in life."
Kristina Edmonds (Owner and Head Coach, Texas Pride Club):
"I am lucky and grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of Missy's 500 wins. Missy is an incredible role model for all young women showing how one can accomplish excellence in all areas of life on the field and off through commitment, grit, competitiveness and a willingness to consistently achieve at the highest level regardless of what it takes. Building a powerhouse hockey program that continues to achieve greatness through generations and decades is unique and special. I am so proud to have once called Maryland my home and have the opportunity to learn from Missy."
Megan Callahan Fraser (Head Coach, Johns Hopkins):
"So proud to be a Terp and help honor Missy for her 500th win. She is inspirational as a coach, mentor and friend."
