COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Madison Maguire of the sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Week Tuesday after her breakout performance Friday night.
The Rumson, N.J. native scored her first two career goals to lead the Terrapins to a 3-2 victory over Michigan State Friday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Maguire scored in the 39th and 57th minutes to break a 1-1 tie and then give the Terrapins (10-3, 4-1 B1G) an insurance goal. The Terps won their third straight game.
Michigan State scored in the ninth minute for the early lead, then the Terps tied it up before halftime. Three minutes into the second half, Maguire put the Terrapins on top when she worked the ball around a defender just inside the circle and cracked a shot that banged in.
In the 57th minute, Maguire struck again when she finished off a pass on the far post from redshirt senior Emma Rissinger to make it a 3-1 lead for Maryland.
Next, the Terps travel to Ohio State (5-8, 0-4) for a 3:30 p.m. matchup on Friday in Columbus. The Terrapins-Buckeyes game will be streamed live online through Buckeye Vision and a subscription is required. Live stats will be available here.
Maryland will play at No. 5 Penn State (12-1, 4-1) Sunday at 4 p.m. in State College, Pa. The Maryland-Penn State game will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
