COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman outside hitter Gia Milana posted a match-high 20 kills as the Maryland volleyball team fell to Iowa in three sets on Friday evening. The Hawkeyes (15-4, 5-2 B1G) defeated the Terps (9-11, 0-7) by set scores of 25-23, 26-24, 25-19.

Milana also led the Terrapins with a .366 hitting percentage. Sophomore libero Kelsey Wicinski notched 13 digs and freshman setter Taylor Smith dished 31 assists.

The Terps and Hawkeyes tied 13 times and traded the lead six times in the first set. After Iowa took an early lead to start the match, Maryland went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead. A kill from Milana put the Terps up 13-11. The Hawkeyes came back to tie the set, 15-15. Ashlyn MacGregor and Angel Gaskin combined for a block to tie the set at 21-21, but Iowa posted two straight points to take a 23-22 lead. Maryland tied the set with a Liz Twilley kill at 23-23, but the Hawkeyes notched two straight kills to take the set, 25-23.

The Terrapins pulled ahead to take a 6-2 lead in set two off kills from Milana and Smith. A MacGregor kill pushed Maryland ahead, 10-6. Iowa went on a 5-1 run to pull within one, 12-11. The Terps again pulled ahead, 17-14. Iowa strung together a 3-0 run to take a 20-19 lead, but kills from Twilley and Milana gave Maryland a 21-20 lead. The Hawkeyes reached set point following a 4-0 run at 24-21, but the Terps fought back to tie the set, 24-24. Iowa notched two straight points to win the set, 26-24.

The teams played closely coming out of the break Iowa lead 6-5. Milana strung together three staright kills as Maryland pulled within two, 12-10. Milana posted a late kills as the Terrapins stayed within three, 20-17, but Iowa put together a 4-0 run to get to match point, 24-17. Murray and Milana notched kills to extend the set, but the Hawkeyes were able to close it, 25-19.

Maryland returns to the XFINITY Center Pavilion on Sunday to host No. 2 Nebraska (14-1, 5-1 B1G) at 1 p.m.
