VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman Brandon Cray highlighted Maryland's performers at the Bearcat Open on the campus of Binghamton University Sunday, placing second in the 125-pound bracket. The Steinert, N.J. native went 4-1 on the day, racking up three bonus point victories to make his second career podium appearance as a Terp.

He rattled off two major decisions in his opening matches, beating Bucknell's Mike Macklin (Maj 12-4) and Binghamton's Carlos Aucancela (Maj 15-6). After a decision victory over Princeton's Matteo DeVincenzo (6-4), Cray won an exciting sudden victory match vs. Brown's Michael Russo, tossing Russo on his back for a pin. Cray was edged by 2016 NCAA qualifier Shaku Laney (Ohio University) in the final, 8-3.

Several other Terps turned in solid days on the mat, including sophomore Wade Hodges (157), who finished 4-2 on the afternoon. After surrendering a close decision in his opening match, Hodges posted four straight wins, including two pins, to advance to the sixth round of the consolation ladder.

Redshirt Freshman Sam Rowell (174) also placed for the UMD, winning four matches on the day to finish sixth at 174. Freshman Nick McShea posted his first career falls as a Terp, pinning Harvard's Logan Kirby and Steven Hoadley (USMAPS) to finish 2-2.      

Freshman Alex Vargas (125), redshirt freshman Danny Boychuck (157), redshirt freshman Jakob Restrepo (157), redshirt freshman Jahi Jones (157) and freshman Spencer Woods (174) all finished the day with three wins. Vargas notched a decision (8-3) over No. 14 ranked Dalton Macri (Cornell) in his opening round match.    

The Terps will prep for their first dual matches of the season next Sunday, November 20 when the team competes in the Cavalier duals in Charlottesville, Va. Maryland will first face Lock Haven at 11:00 am before battling Virginia at 3:00 pm.
