Papell Paces Terps at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Maryland women's golf team finished 11th in a competitive field at the 2016 Lady Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday.

Alexandra Papell led the Terps (72-77-75) and tied for 27th overall. Papell shot a Maryland tournament-low, par 72 on day one.

Freshman Ludovica Farina (74-77-75) was two strokes behind Papell and finished tied for 35th. Fellow rookie Ludovica Scandroglio (80-75-74) tied for 49th with after going shooting her tourney best +2 on the final round Tuesday.

Panitta Yusabai (77-77-80) tied for 67and senior Brooke Kochevar took 81st with a 79-82-80.

“I think for it being our first event of the spring, it went pretty well,” head coach Diana Cantu said. “We ended up beating five teams ranked ahead of us, including two top-30 teams. As a team, we did a lot of great things. I'm proud of how Alexandra played, along with our two freshmen.

“We are going to keep working on our games and build up our confidence. We've got some time before our next event to continue to progress with our tournament preparation.”

Maryland returns to the course on March 10 at the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in Augusta, Ga.
