COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland gymnastics team posted its best team balance beam score of the season Monday night in a close meet vs. Big Ten opponent Penn State at the XFINITY Center. The Nittany Lions held on in the final two events to top the Terps, 196.350 to 195.350.
“I'm so proud of the team,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “To have a meet two nights ago, and we've been talking about the importance of consistency, and come out here and hit 24 routines is a big, big step for us. I know we didn't get the win, but more importantly, we got healthy mentally tonight. This is going to help us going forward.”
The Terrapins tallied a score of 48.900 on balance beam, led by freshman Shynelle Agaran's 9.850 and a score of 9.800 from junior Leah Slobodin.
Maryland opened the meet on vault, earning a score of 48.575. Freshman Macey Roberts and junior Sarah Faller led the way with their scores of 9.750.
Next, the Terps rotated to the uneven bars, tallying a team score of 48.875. Senior Kathy Tang notched a score of 9.850, followed by sophomores Evelyn Nee and Abbie Epperson with scores of 9.800.
After their strong showing on the balance beam, the Terrapins finished the night in the floor exercise. As a team, they earned a score of 49.000, left by Roberts with a 9.850 and junior Emily Brauckmuller with a 9.825.
Next, the Terrapins will travel north to compete at New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, followed by a 4 p.m. meet at George Washington Sunday.
