
Terps Finish Strong at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Maryland track & field wrapped up a strong weekend of competition at the Penn Relays Saturday evening with a pair of relay performances on the men's and women's side.
The women's 4x800 relay of Charlotte Staver, Alexa Squirini, Rachelle Alexander and Catherine Voelpel had a quality showing, finishing seventh in the field with a time of 9:01.91.
The men's 4x200 relay turned in one of the fastest times ever for a Maryland team in the event, going 1:26.40 to take ninth. AJ Ruffin, Brandon Thompson, Alex Leto and Eric Thomas combined to hit the sixth fastest time for a UMD squad in the relay, after qualifying for the finals with the ninth fastest time (1:27.11) on Friday.
The Terps posted several solid performances on Friday, which included a top-10 time fron Paul Joseph in the 400 meter hurdles (53.22). Senior Chioma Onyekwere finished second in the discus, throwing 52.02 meters (173-11).
The Terps' team of Deborah Olawuni, Lisa Meneau, Micha Powell and Alexandra Lucki combined to finish seventh in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:56.67. Maryland then posted a second place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay, clocking a time of 57.32.
Maryland had a solid showing in the men's sprint medley relay, finishing sixth in the field as Ruffin, Thomas, Leto and Trettel combined to go 3:25.87. The men's distance medley relay also turned in a quality race, as the team of Loadholt, Joseph, Bleichner and Trettel were 15th in 10:12.58.
