
Incoming Terp Competes Well at J.O. Nationals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Incoming Maryland gymnastics freshman Alecia Farina competed at the 2016 U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships, placing in the top-25 in three events against the nation's best.
“We are so proud of Alecia and everything she has accomplished throughout her exceptional junior Olympic career,” head coach Brett Nelligan said. “I'm really excited for next year and looking forward to seeing what she can do as a Terp.”
Farina finished second on floor with a 9.625 and placed 10th on vault with a 9.600. She also finished 23rd in the all-around with a 37.500. Farina competed in the Senior E All-Around.
The U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships is one of the national championships of USA Gymnastics, the sport's national governing body in the United States. The culminating event for the competitive season, the top seven gymnasts from each of USA Gymnastics' eight regions advances to nationals.
Olympians Shawn Johnson, Samantha Peszek, Courtney McCool, Jordyn Wieber and Kyla Ross are a few of the former participants to compete in the prestigious junior Olympic championships.
Farina is the only gymnast is Ohio high school history to receive a perfect 10 – a feat she has achieved three times on vault. In March, Farina won the Ohio High School Athletic Association titles on vault, beam, floor and all-around. With 15 gold medals and four silvers out of a possible 20, Farina is the most decorated gymnast in Ohio high school history.
At the 2014 Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships, she placed third on beam. Farina is also a two-time Cleveland.com Gymnast of the Year.
