COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Five members of the Maryland women's lacrosse team were named IWLCA All-Americans, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Wednesday.
Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings, senior defender Alice Mercer and sophomore attacker Megan Whittle earned spots on the first team. Junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg was named to the second team and junior defender Nadine Hadnagy was selected to the third team. All five Terps made the IWLCA All-South Region First Team last week, and all five were Tewaaraton nominees.
The five Maryland players are all of the team's returning starters from last season and have helped lead the Terps to a 20-0 record and the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.
Maryland is tied for the most All-American honorees this season with five and has the most first team selections.
Cummings has been named a First Team All-American in each of her four seasons in College Park. This season, she leads the team with 70 points, 60 ground balls, 128 draw controls and 47 caused turnovers. The Ellicott City, Md., native is a 2016 Tewaaraton finalist and won the prestigious award in 2014 and 2015. Cummings was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year for the second season in a row and was also an All-Big Ten selection and the Big Ten Tournament MVP.
Mercer, the 2016 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, leads Maryland's sixth-ranked defense. The Woodbine, Md., native, who was named an IWLCA Second Team All-American in 2015, has 32 ground balls, 16 draw controls and 27 caused turnovers this season. Mercer is a 2016 Tewaaraton finalist and was named to the All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Tournament teams.
Whittle paces Maryland's top-ranked offense, leading the team with 65 goals this season. The Glenwood, Md., native has 132 goals in her career, averaging 3.30 goals per game. Whittle was selected as the 2016 Big Ten Attack Player of the Year and was an All-Big Ten selection. She was named an IWLCA Third Team All-American last season.
Stukenberg has compiled 40 goals, 15 assists and 55 points this season, ranking third on the team in each category. One of the leaders in the midfield, she also has 25 ground balls, 36 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers. Stukenberg was an All-Big Ten selection and was also named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
Hadnagy has also stepped up as a leader, helping captain the sixth-ranked Maryland defense that returned just two starters from last year. The Farmingdale, N.Y., native ranks second on the team with 36 ground balls and third with 18 caused turnovers. Hadnagy was named to the All-Big Ten team.
The Terps have had 161 All-Americans in the program's history.
The IWLCA named 48 student-athletes to the Division I All-American teams for 2016. The IWLCA will honor these student-athletes at the IWLCA All-American Banquet on June 4, 2016, at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
