COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Graduate student Welma Luus of the Maryland field hockey team was recently granted a sixth year of eligibility, making her eligible to play her fourth season of field hockey for the Terrapins this fall.
Luus started at Maryland prior to the 2011-12 season. She competed on the women's tennis team for her first two seasons, but her desire to play field hockey as well still lingered. She joined the field hockey squad at the beginning of the 2013-14 season, splitting time between the two teams for two seasons.
The Pretoria, South Africa native exhausted her tennis eligibility at the end of the 2014-15 season, and she competed for the field hockey team last fall. She led the Terrapins with 20 goals, including five game-winners on the season. She earned NFHCA Third Team All-America honors, as well as All-Big Ten honors.
“For Welma, for our team, I applaud the NCAA for granting her the opportunity to start her MBA in Maryland's Smith School while competing in her fourth and final season of hockey,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Welma is an amazing dual athlete who naturally transforms tennis shots into goals. Her vision prior to getting the ball is extraordinary and we are thrilled for her.”
“I could not be more excited for the opportunity to play my fourth year of field hockey,” Luus said. “Maryland has been my home for the last five years and being able to compete with my field hockey family for one more season really is a dream come true.”
Last November, Luus set a Big Ten Tournament record with seven goals in the Terps' three-game run to the Big Ten title. She notched four goals in the Championship game and was named Big Ten Tournament Most Valuable Player.
