Feature Writing Internship

Job Purpose: Under the supervision of the Director of Digital Media and Website Management, the Feature Writer Intern will provide assigned written feature stories, and should possess strong writing and editing backgrounds. Candidates must be organized, responsible, professional and punctual.

Responsibilities will fall strongly in the creation of written feature stories on University of Maryland athletic programs, students, coaches and select alumni. The intern will work with Digital Media and Media Relations departments to produce long- and short-form features (approx. 800-2000 words). Candidates should have flexible schedules to work afternoons, nights and weekends as needed during the time of the internship.

Requirements: Intern must be a University of Maryland student with an interest in in journalism, creative writing, communications or a related discipline. The internship is paid with compensation on a per-story basis.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare feature stories on players, coaches and staff for website and game day publications
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new content ideas
  • Prepare stories highlighting community, marketing and other initiatives of the University of Maryland athletics department
  • Intern will have interaction with staff members of the University of Maryland, as well as coaches, students and alumni. The candidates will be expected to act in a professional manner at all times.

Expectations:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and game nights as assigned.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with emphasis on writing and editing, required. Applicants will be asked to provide writing samples if invited to interview. Previous sports writing experience and knowledge of University of Maryland athletics are a plus.
