COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Training camp is in full swing as the Maryland football team continues to prepare for the 2016 season, its first under Head Coach DJ Durkin.
Wednesday was the third day of training camp and the first for the Terps in helmets and shoulder pads.
"It's been hot two of the three days out here, and the guys have responded well," said Durkin. "We've been out here for 2-3 hours really taking it to them and they're making it through and doing a good job. They worked really hard in the summer and that's paying off. Obviously we have a long ways to go right now but three practices in I'm pleased with where we're at."
Wednesday also marked the first day of camp that was open to the media. With many new names and faces on the roster, Durkin was asked about how the new Terps were making their impact felt.
"Competition changes everything," explained Durkin. "A coach can sit there and say all he wants, but really the biggest thing that can change the room is competition. When a guy who can really play comes in the room, it raises the bar for everyone in there.
"If I'm a guy fighting to keep my job, I have to practice harder and play better to do it," Durkin continued. "And the guy coming in the room now, he has to compete. Those guys came here for a reason and they want to contribute and help; well you have to go earn it. Its's the greatest motivator in coaching."
Senior William Likely also spoke to the media, talking about the new up-tempo offense that he and the defense has to go up against every day, and how excited he is to be back on the football field.
"I'm very excited about the start of camp and to be back out there with my teammates and the coaches," said Likely. "It's off to a fast start and we're just trying to keep it going. The entire team is ready to work. We're not looking back on last year, it's a new beginning and we're just coming out ready to play."
The Terps return to the practice fields on Thursday morning. Maryland will also hold a practice open to the public on August 20.
