COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland volleyball team began its preseason practices and meetings to prepare and train for the upcoming 2016 season this week.
Following team meetings on Monday, the Terps held their first practice of the season on Tuesday morning. The coaching staff worked with the team for the first time since spring semester, but the Terps were diligent in training and practicing in the offseason.
“We're going through a lot of teaching and fundamentals early, but I think this team has a lot of talent and depth,” head coach
Steve Aird said. “It's clear the team worked really hard over the summer. They're fit and their skills look good, and we're ready to go.”
Senior middle blocker
Ashlyn MacGregor, who helped lead the team through training this summer, is eager to begin preparing for her final season in College Park.
“We've been working all summer, but we're really excited to have the coaches back in the gym helping us out,” MacGregor said. “We're all itching to play some matches and I'm looking forward to seeing what this season holds!”
This fall, Maryland welcomes the No. 16 freshman class in the nation to College Park, featuring Nell Drummey, Megan McTigue, Gia Milana, Katie Myers, Aylin Saran and Taylor Smith. The freshmen experienced their first practice as Terps with the full roster and coaching staff. “It feels great to be training here at Maryland,” Drummey said. “We have a vision for the program and we know what we want it to be. I'm excited to begin this journey as a Terp, and I'm thankful to be a part of this process because I know it will be a memorable one.” Following two weeks of training on the court and in the weight room, the Terps will face off against each other in the annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday, August 20, at 7 p.m. in the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The team will prep for one more week before beginning the 2016 slate with the Maryland Invite on Friday, August 26.
