LANCASTER, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (1-2) fell to No. 4 Duke (3-0), 1-0, Friday night in the Big Ten/ACC Cup at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa. The Terrapins controlled much of the game offensively, but Duke's goalkeeping kept them from finding the net.
Maryland took 12 shots to Duke's seven and had four penalty corner opportunities to the Blue Devils' one in the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Holliday notched two saves and senior Welma Luus picked up a defensive save. Duke goalkeeper Sammi Steele had nine saves.
“We imposed our will for 70 minutes,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “We played fantastic field hockey. Our game is growing. We outshot them, we hit the post three times and we're going to have to work harder on our goal scoring and our penalty corner execution to come out with the win.”
Maryland outshot Duke 9-4 in the first half, yet the teams were scoreless at the break.
Duke scored the game's lone goal when Ashley Kristen tipped in a goal after a long pass in the 42nd minute.
After using their timeout with 10:33 to play, the Terrapins threatened to score throughout the final minutes of the game, including a shot that hit the post.
Meharg is in her 29th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 510-125-9 (.799), seven NCAA titles, 22 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. She has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times in her career.
