COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Gordon Wild scored the game-winning goal with 44 seconds remaining as the No. 7 Maryland men's soccer team edged local rival No. 24 Georgetown, 2-1, on a picturesque Friday night at Ludwig Field.
Eryk Williamson also scored for the Terps (2-0-1). The announced crowd of 7,413 was the fourth-largest in Ludwig Field annals.
After a scoreless first half, Williamson's first goal of the season came in the 55th minute. Amar Sejdic played a perfect through-ball from the midfield and Williamson beat Hoya keeper JT Marcinkowski for the score from eight yards.
The Maryland defense, which boasted a 199-minute scoreless streak heading into Friday's match, surrendered a Georgetown goal in the 84th minute when Achara found the back of the net after a nice setup from the Hoya midfield.
The Terps would have the final say, however, when Wild's penalty kick was saved and he followed up the resulting rebound with a strike to the near post for the game-winner.
“It was another magical night at Ludwig,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “It was a great game between two great teams and thankfully our team came out on top. We showed great character after letting up a goal with five minutes left in the game. I thought our guys responded well and opened up a few chances and then earned a penalty.
“It was just a special night. I have tremendous respect for Georgetown. They've had a very strong team over the past couple of years and we've always come up a little bit short. Tonight we were able to break through and put ourselves in a good place moving forward. I think our team showed some toughness tonight.”
Maryland welcomes USF on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field in its next action before a two-game road swing.
