LAWRENCE, Kan. – Freshman outside hitter Gia Milana posted a career high 19 kills as the Maryland volleyball team (5-1) swept Chicago State (0-6) in the Terps' final match of the Kansas Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins won by set scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-14.
Milana also notched nine digs while sophomore libero Kelsey Wicinski had 10 digs. Senior setter Whitney Craigo made 32 assists and sophomore opposite hitter Angel Gaskin led the match with eight blocks.
The Terrapins tallied eight service aces against the Cougars, led by three from Craigo.
The Terps controlled the first set, taking advantage of Chicago State errors to jump out to a 7-1 lead. Murray hit a kill down the middle for a 9-5 lead and a Gaskin-MacGregor block pushed Maryland ahead, 16-8. Another block from Gaskin and Murray put the Terps up, 20-9. Milana posted her fifth kill to put Maryland at set point, 24-11, and sophomore Abigail Bentz served an ace to end the set, 25-11.
The Terps continued the momentum in the second set as a MacGregor service ace gave the team an early 4-1 lead. Craigo served a pair of aces as Maryland continued to roll, but the Cougars were able to pull within three, 18-15. The Terps went on a run following a timeout, and two Gaskin-MacGregor blocks put Maryland at set point, 24-17. On the next play, Chicago State posted a bad set, giving the Terrapins a 2-0 match lead.
Maryland took an early lead in set three but Chicago State came back to tie, 7-7. The Terps followed with a run, including an ace from Craigo. Junior Samantha Higginbothem served an ace to put Maryland ahead 13-9. A Cougars error gave the Terps a 20-12 lead and a kill from Twilley put the Terps at match point, 20-12. Wicinski posed a service ace to give Maryland a 25-14 set win and a match sweep.
Wicinski and MacGregor were named to the all-tournament team.
Maryland will face Georgetown, Princeton and Towson in the Georgetown Classic next Friday and Saturday in Washington, D.C.
