COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Numerous former Maryland football standouts will be seeking bids in Super Bowl LI this weekend when New England hosts Pittsburgh and Atlanta welcomes Green Bay for the conference finals.
Darrius Heyward-Bey and Sean Davis hope to lead the Steelers to their 10th straight win and a spot in the clubs ninth Super Bowl.
Heyward-Bey, now in his eighth season in the NFL after being drafted in the first round (seventh overall) in 2009, is tied for fourth on the team with two receiving touchdowns and his 19 yards per reception ranks second on the squad.
Davis, who was named the Steelers Rookie of the Year in 2016 after being drafted in the second round, has played in 16 games with nine starts. He ranks fourth on the team with 70 tackles and tied for second with 55 solo tackles. The rookie also has one interception and 1.5 sacks on the year.
Davis made perhaps the biggest play of the year in last week's win over Kansas City, when he broke up a pass on a two-point conversion that would have tied the game late in the fourth quarter.
Former Terp defensive tackle Darius Kilgo will be on the opposite sideline as he's a member of New England's 10-man practice squad. Kilgo earned a Super Bowl ring last season as a member of the Denver Broncos.
On the NFC side, the Falcons promoted former Terp defensive tackle Joe Vellano to their active roster on Tuesday and he'll be available to play against the Packers on Sunday. Vellano was originally signed by New England in 2013 and won a Super Bowl with the Patriots. He spent two years with New England, playing in 21 games with nine starts and recording 26 total tackles.
