COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland students joined for the 'Zaching Against Cancer' 5K on Sunday morning to honor former Maryland basketball manager Zach Lederer and support the Zaching Against Cancer Foundation (ZACF).
An ongoing inspiration to the Maryland men's basketball program, Lederer passed away in March of 2014 at the age of 20 after a heroic battle with brain cancer. He was known for his optimism and energy despite his cruel disease.
The 5K represented what Lederer's signature "Zaching" pose represented: strength, courage, determination and hope for those affected by cancer. In attendance were race organizers from Phi Chi Theta, Lederer's parents and student runners who recieved a T-shirt with their registration fee.
Proceeds from the event will support the Zaching Against Cancer Foundation (ZACF), which is a non-profit charity established to provide support, strength, inspiration and positive influences to cancer patients and their support networks. ZACF provides college scholarships to those who have overcome adversity as a cancer survivor or caregiver.
