ROSEMONT, Ill. – Freshman Kyler Greenwalt of the 12th-ranked Maryland field hockey team (12-5, 6-2 B1G) earned her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the season Monday.
The rookie from Gambrills, Md. helped lead the Terps to a pair of dominating, top 25 wins on the road with two goals and an assist on the week.
At No. 3 Virginia Tuesday, she came off the bench and scored Maryland's second and fifth goals in a 5-4 win. In the 17th minute, she scored off a rebound on a penalty corner for a 2-1 lead. She added the Terps' fifth and final goal when she collected a loose ball in the circle and scored in the 49th minute.
In Sunday's regular season finale at No. 21 Rutgers, she assisted on Maryland's third goal, when she passed it up ahead to teammate Madison Maguire for a 3-0 lead in the first half.
The Terrapins have won six games straight, including four straight over ranked teams. They beat No. 25 Ohio State, 3-1, last Friday, after Greenwalt scored 71 seconds in. Last Sunday, they beat No. 6 Penn State, 2-1, in double overtime after Carrie Hanks scored in the 87th minute.
Maryland was tabbed as the No. 12 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches poll released Oct. 17.
With Sunday's victory, the Terrapins locked up the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. They will host a quarterfinal matchup vs. seventh-seeded Michigan State next Sunday in College Park.
The Maryland-Michigan State matchup will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Michigan State will host the advancing teams Nov. 3 and 5 in East Lansing. Admission and parking are both free for Sunday's contest. For more on the Big Ten Tournament, click here.
