COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team (16-8, 5-7 Big Ten ) begins its toughest stretch of the season as the Terps travel to No. 5 Minnesota (21-2, 10-2) and No. 8 Wisconsin (15-6, 6-6) this weekend.
Maryland will face four top-10 teams on the road over the next two weeks. Five of the Terrapins' next six matches are against top-10 teams.
The Terps upset No. 17 Purdue in five sets on Sunday. Freshman Erika Pritchard led Maryland with 18 kills while sophomore Gia Milana and freshman Samantha Drechsel each added 13. The win was the Terrapins' first-ever of the Boilermakers and marked the first time Maryland has reached 16 wins under head coach Steve Aird.
The Golden Gophers are on a nine-match win streak. Freshman Stephanie Samedy leads Minnesota with 3.86 kills per set. Junior Samantha Seliger-Swenson, the reigning Big Ten Setter of the Year, is averaging 12.20 assists per set.
The Badgers defeated the Terps on Oct. 18 in College Park. Freshman Dana Rettke leads Wisconsin with 3.43 kills per set and 1.41 blocks per set.
Sophomore outside hitter Gia Milana leads the Terps for the second straight season offensively. She is currently averaging 3.14 kills per set. Freshman outside hitter Erika Pritchard currently leads the Big Ten with 0.47 service aces per set.
Freshman Samantha Burgio has slotted into the libero position over the last six matches. In that span, she is averaging 3.74 digs per set. In two matches last week, she had no receiving errors. With Burgio in the lineup, the Terps currently start four freshmen, two sophomores and a senior.
