COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team (16-11, 5-10 Big Ten) faces No. 1 Penn State (24-1, 14-1) in the Terps' final regular season road trip on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Nittany Lions are the fifth-straight ranked opponent and the fourth-straight top-10 foe for Maryland. Including this Saturday, Maryland will compete in eight matches against top-10 teams.
Maryland is coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Nebraska on Wednesday. Freshman opposite Samantha Drechsel led the Terps with nine kills while hitting .333 against the Huskers.
This is the second time the Terrapins and Nittany Lions will face each other this season. Maryland fell to then-No. 3 Penn State in three sets on Oct. 7 in College Park.
Penn State is on a 14-match win streak, including 3-0 wins over Rutgers and Iowa last week. The Nittany Lions are led offensively by a trio of seniors: Simone Lee (3.88 kills/set), Haleigh Washington (3.12 k/s) and Ali Frantti (2.45 k/s). Washington leads the nation with a .520 hitting percentage and ranks second in the Big Ten with 1.45 blocks per set.
On Thursday, Maryland announced the signing of 6-foot-3 middle blocker Rainelle Jones to the 2018 roster. The No. 32 recruit in her class, Jones has two years of experience with the U.S. National Team development program.
Sophomore outside hitter Gia Milana leads the Terps for the second straight season offensively. She is currently averaging 3.07 kills per set. Freshman outside hitter Erika Pritchard currently leads the Big Ten with 0.44 service aces per set.
Maryland has already hit numerous milestones in 2017. The Terps have upset two top-25 teams, earning the program's first-ever wins over Southern California and Purdue. The Terrapins began the season with 10 straight wins, the best start to a season for the program since 2005. Head coach Steve Aird has led Maryland to 16 wins so far this year, the most for him as the head of a program.
