The Terrapins (10-5-3, 5-1-2) will miss out on the Big Ten Tournament semifinals after winning the championship the last three seasons. Wisconsin (9-4-4, 4-3-1) scored both of its goals in the second half after Elney opened the scoring in the 28th minute.
Maryland was the better of the two sides in the opening minutes and held possession in the Wisconsin third. The Badgers had a couple of golden chances in in the 12th minute, but Maryland keeper Dayne St. Clair made a pair of incredible reaction stops to keep the road team off the board.
Elney provided the breakthrough in the 28th minute. Senior Jake Rozhansky made an incisive run into the box and let a pass go that deflected off a Wisconsin defender and into the path of Elney, who slotted home from six yards with his right foot.
Wisconsin tied the match in the 51st minute when Noah Leibold pounced on a rebound from a corner and got the ball pat St. Clair. In the 63rd minute, Rozhansky had a decent look that he sent wide as both teams tried to find the winner.
Freshman Eric Matzelevich provided a good second ball header off a corner that found that head of sophomore Donovan Pines, but the big center back headed wide. Matzelevich had a chance of his own in the 78th minute, but he fired high from 12 yards out.
Mark Segbers got the winner for the Badgers, turning in a Chris Mueller cross from close range to send Wisconsin into the next round.
Maryland will await its NCAA Tournament fate next Monday, Nov. 13.
