COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland Student Athlete Advisory Committee hosted its second annual “Fan Fest” following the football team's spring game at Maryland Stadium.
Fans that attended the spring game flocked to the north concourse after the football scrimmage and took part in activities such as corn hole, inflatable rides and games, mini golf, football toss and basketball. In addition, the football team and head coach DJ Durkin met fans and signed autographs for the large contingent of Terrapin faithful.
"Fan Fest is one of the SAAC initiatives that I have been looking forward to most for the year,” said Big Ten Fellow and event coordinator Malina Howard. “I think this event is such a great opportunity for the community to see how much our student-athletes care about giving back and community service. It is amazing how many different organizations and charities we as an athletic department can touch and make a difference, and see how they are able to make a difference in each of our student-athletes and staff's lives. I just want to thank all those who helped put Fan Fest together and supported in this wonderful cause!”
The event was coordinated by senior Madison Martin (softball), incoming SAAC President Kristen Confroy (women's basketball) and Adam Greene (football).
“Fan fest is my favorite event that we host,” said Martin. “It encompasses all of our teams and organizations that we represent during the year. The athletic department coming together for one event is what SAAC is all about. It's truly a great event for a great cause. Helping our community, that gives us so much, is something that my fellow student athletes care deeply about. Being able to use our platform for more than sports is such a rewarding and humbling experience. Fan fest is the perfect way to show that.”
Student-athlete representatives from numerous teams were on hand to help out and raise awareness for the foundations their teams support throughout the season. The charities represented were as follows: the Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease Foundation, Zaching Against Cancer, Kids vs. Cancer, Uplifting Athletes, Reddy 2 Fight, Pin Cancer, Team Impact, JDRF, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, G-Pact, Comfort Cases, Dreams for Kids, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Bright Beginnings Child Development Center, Boomer Esiason Foundation and the Susan G Komen Foundation.
