COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team capped the preseason in front of more than 600 supporters at the annual Red-White Scrimmage Saturday evening in the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
"It's so great to see the community into Red-White and excited for volleyball in College Park," head coach Steve Aird said. "This was a great chance for our younger players to put on the jersey and play the game in front of a crowd. I think for the most part, we had some really strong performances, and we're excited to continue this momentum into the season next week."
Prior to the match, fans joined the team and coaching staff for a reception in XFINITY, catered by Aird's wife, Brandy. The team mingled with supporters while Aird gave a state of the union on the program.
The Red team defeated the White team, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19). The Red squad started with middle blocker Katie Myers, opposite hitter Samantha Drechsel, outside hitter Gia Milana, setter Taylor Smith and defensive specialists Nell Drummey and Samantha Burgio. The White team started outside hitter Lexi Alden, outside hitter Erika Pritchard, setter Samantha Snyder, opposite hitter Angel Gaskin, defensive specialist Samantha Higginbothem and middle blocker Hailey Murray.
Saturday was the first time Maryland fans saw the 2017 freshman class in action, including Drechsel, Burgio, Alden, Pritchard, setter Chloe Prejean, middle blocker Jada Gardner. The class is Maryland's first-ever top-10 recruiting class and features four Under Armour All-Americans.
The scrimmage was also the first time fans saw redshirt freshman middle blocker Katie Myers and sophomore transfer setter Samantha Snyder compete on the court.
The Terps open the 2017 schedule against UMBC next Friday at 7 p.m. in the Maryland Invite.
