Second Half Burst Propels Terps

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's soccer team scored two goals in 77 seconds in the second half in a 3-0 win over Navy at Ludwig Field Sunday night.

The Terrapins (2-0) received goals from senior Chelsea Jackson, sophomore Jlon Flippens and junior Jarena Harmon. Maryland recorded its first shutout since Oct. 21, 2015.

The first 45 minutes produced a fairly even affair, with neither team producing many high quality chances. Freshman Mikayla Dayes produced a shot after a nice turn 30 yards from goal, but her effort was saved with 22 minutes remaining in the half.

The Terps came out as a different team in the second half, controlling the majority of play. In the 60th minute, freshman Mary Johnston slipped a through ball down the right channel to Dayes, who played a cross to Jackson that the senior tapped in from close range. It was the first assist of both Johnston's and Dayes' careers.

Just over a minute later, Johnston was fouled just outside the box. That set up Flippens, who hit a low hard shot past Navy keeper Sydney Fortson. The tally was the second of Flippens' career.

Maryland put the match away in the 84th minute. Senior Kate Waters picked out a streaking Anissa Mose down the right flank and the freshman found Harmon in the middle of the box for the third goal of the match. It was the first assist of Mose's career.

Mose, freshman Brynn Drury and freshman Malikae Dayes all made their first career starts. Freshman Jordan Schaefer made her Maryland debut in the first half.

Maryland's defense was played well in front of keeper Rachel Egyed, who was spotless when called upon to thwart Navy's efforts. For the second consecutive match, freshman Hope Lewandoski and senior Hope Gouterman started and played all 90 minutes.

Maryland returns to action Friday on the road at Gardner-Webb. Action is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m.
