#6 Maryland Set for Opener vs. Saint Joseph's

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team opens its 2017 season vs. Saint Joseph's in College Park Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

• Admission and parking are both free for Sunday's contest. The Terrapins will be hosting a pregame clinic. Registration is open to any and all girls age 6 to 17. Registration is $25 starting at 10:30 a.m. Fans are also invited to an ice cream social after the game.

Scouting saint joseph's

• Saint Joseph's went 15-6 overall last year and advanced to the Atlantic 10 title game last year. The Hawks were picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 this year.

• The Hawks return last year's leading scorer, Anna Willocks, who tallied 25 goals and 12 assistslast year. She was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and an NFHCA Second Team All-American.

Maryland tabbed preseason top ten

• Maryland was tabbed as the No. 6 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches Preseason poll released Aug. 22.

• The Terrapins have started the year in the top 10 in each of the last 19 years, since 1999.

Three Terps Selected To Big Ten Players To Watch List

• Junioe Linnea Gonzales, seniors Lein Holsboer and Carrie Hanks were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list earlier this week. The full list, click HERE.

• Hanks has been a leader of the Terrapins' defense the last three years, starting in all 69 games of her career. She's scored nine goals with 12 assists in her career. Hanks was named to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team for the second straight season last year.

• Holsboer earned NFHCA Third Team All-America honors last season, as well as All-Big Ten Second Team honors. She has 11 career goals and 24 career assists in her 68 career games.

• Gonzales was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2015. She has notched 20 career goals and six assists. The junior also earned NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region honors the last two seasons.

staff updates

• The Terrapins welcome two new assistant staff members in 2017. Former Terrapin Katie Bam joins the Terrapins as assistant coach and Marvin Bam comes as an assistant coach as well.

Katie Bam, a two-time Olympian, played for the Terrapins from 2007 through 2010, leading them to the 2008 and 2010 NCAA championships, as well as three ACC titles. A four-time NFHCA All-American, Bam was named ACC Player of the Year all four years of her career, and won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top player twice. She represented the United States in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

• Bam brings over 20 years of experience as a player and a coach to College Park. In 2017, he served as an assistant at Harvard and helpe the Crimson to its first Ivy League title since 2004. As a player, Bam earned 98 international caps, competing in over 30 international tournaments. A native of South Africa, Bam represented his home country in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, as well as at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, the African Cup Championship and the Commonwealth Games. 

Maryland In Openers

• Maryland is 39-3-2 in season openers and the Terps have won their last 21 straight.

• This is the first year the Terrapins will open the season at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex since 2000. They've opened 29 of their 43 seasons on the road.

• The Terps are 11-3 in home openers at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex and have outscored their opponents 53-17 in those 14 games.

HOME SWEET HOME

Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage.

• The Terps are 159-19 (.893) all-time at the Complex.

• Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, 2011. The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-No. 1 Old Dominion.

• The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 26 of Maryland's NCAA Tournament games and has played host to three Final Fours (2007, 2010, 2014). The Terrapins are 23-3 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field.

PACK THE HOUSE

• The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season. The Terrapins have led the nation in attendance in five of the last seven years.

• An NCAA-record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex.

• Eight Terrapins, former and present, are currently on USA Field Hockey's national team rosters. 

• Jill Witmer competed with Team USA in the Rio Olympics last summer, along with volunteer assistant coach Stefanie Fee.

• Recent Terp alums Anna Dessoye andAlyssa Parker are on the U.S. Women's National Team. Senior Carrie Hanks and recent grad Kasey Tapman are on the U.S. Developmental Squad.

• Current Terps Brooke DeBerdine and Linnea Gonzales are on the U.S. Under-21 Team.

During Missy Meharg's tenure, the Terrapins have become one of the nation's most dangerous teams in overtime.

• The Terps are 63-24 (.724) all-time in games that went to overtime or penalty strokes.

• In Meharg's tenure, the Terps are 52-20 (.722) in overtime or penalty strokes games.
