COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland Class of 2021 was welcomed to College Park in a big way Saturday night.
The fourth annual 'B1G Show' took place at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium, marking the official kickoff to the athletics season at Maryland. The program featured instructions of athletic traditions with the help of the Mighty Sound of Maryland, Maryland cheerleading and the Maryland dance team.
The students were also welcomed by Maryland athletics director, Kevin Anderson, and head football coach DJ Durkin.
“You have just entered the school of champions,” Anderson said to a roaring crowd. “Last year we won nine conference championships and two national championships. You are the reason why we play!
“The student section needs to be rocking this year,” Durkin exclaimed. “It makes a difference in our games. I promise you that our players are working very hard and we're going to put a product on the field that you can be proud of and cheer for.”
Led by emcees Alex Leto of the track and field team and Dana Rodriguez, students learned the Maryland Victory Song and Alma Mater, in addition to taking part in their first unveiling of the giant Maryland flag down the student section.
SAAC representative Adam Greene of the football team and members of The Pride spoke to the students about good sportsmanship at Maryland events.
“It's great being able to help influence and motivate the freshmen class,” Greene said. “They play a huge role in our success and a big part of what we love to do is playing in front of our fans. Being able to inspire them and get them pumped for the season makes us want to win for them even more.”
Students were also treated to giveaways, corn hole, a rock wall and photos with Testudo in the stadium concourse.
The program was capped off with a Class of 2021 photo on Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in the shape of an “M.”
