COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Hope Breslin scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to deliver a 1-0 win for Illinois (8-5, 3-3 B1G) over Maryland (3-7-4, 1-4-1 B1G) Thursday evening.
The PK came after a foul was called in the box early in the second half, and Breslin finished to the left corner to put the Illini ahead one. Not long after, the game entered a 45-minute delay due to lightning in the area, as both teams headed to locker rooms to wait out the brief storm.
When play resumed, the Terps began pressing with a sense of urgency, racking up some late shot attempts to try to find the equalizer. Despite the pressure, Illinois held the 1-0 advantage to secure the win.
The best chance of the game for either team in the run of play came in the seventh minute, as redshirt freshman Alyssa Poarch drilled a shot from the left wing. Her attempt was heading straight towards the back right corner of the cage, but the Illinois keeper made a diving save to thwart the sure-goal and keep the game scoreless.
Maryland will look to rebound Sunday when the Terps return to action vs. Northwestern at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
