IOWA CITY, Ia. – Behind a career-best 31 kills from sophomore outside hitter
Erika Pritchard, the Maryland volleyball team battled to a five-set victory at Iowa (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 16-25, 16-14) on Friday night.
"Not our prettiest match but we fought hard to find a way to win," said head coach
Adam Hughes. "The fight and mental toughness we showed tonight sums up how our team has been all season. I'm really proud of our group."
The Terps now stand at 18-13, tying the amount of wins they had last year and move to 9-11 in the Big Ten, expanding on Maryland's most wins ever in the conference. This was also Maryland's ninth road win of the season, the most they've had in a year since 2005.
Pritchard's 31 kills are the most by a Maryland player since at least 2010 and the second most by a Big Ten player in any match this season. The sophomore now has 486 kills on the season, the third most ever by a Terrapin and only seven away from the second all-time mark, currently held by Colleen Hurley ('90).
The sophomore had seven kills in the first, four in the second, nine in the third, five in the fourth and six in the fifth to total 31.
Redshirt freshman middle blocker
Katie Myers tied a career-best with 12 kills in the match. Sophomore setter
Nicole Alford tallied 46 assists, freshman middle blocker
Rainelle Jones led with six blocks and three Terps had double-digit digs, led by 23 from freshman libero
Allegra Rivas.
Maryland won the first and third sets while dropping the second and fourth before a wild fifth set. The Terps started things off right by way of a Jones and Pritchard block but dropped down 7-4. Maryland won four of the next five points by way of a Pritchard ace and kill and a senior outside hitter
Liz Twilley kill. Iowa went back up 11-19 and then 12-10. Trailing by two, Maryland won three straight points to take command of the set on kills from Pritchard and Twilley. It was then back and forth. Pritchard twice put the Terps at match point at 14-13 and 15-14. An Iowa attack error ended the match and gave Maryland their ninth Big Ten win and ninth road win of the season.
The Terps will close out the regular season tomorrow night at No. 6 Nebraska, with an 8:00 EST first serve.
