COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- After a sophomore season in which she led the Big Ten in kills at 4.32 per set, outside hitter Erika Pritchard earned First Team All-Big Ten recognition, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Pritchard was a force this season, cementing her place as one of the Big Ten's top attackers, totaling the second most kills ever by a Maryland player with 493 to go with 287 digs, 65 blocks, 22 aces and 18 assists. The Maryland native finished the year in sole possession of the Big Ten kills lead at 4.32/set and 14th nationally in both kills and points (552.5), which stands as the second-best mark in the Big Ten.
The sophomore was essential in leading Maryland to an 18-14 record and a program-best nine Big Ten wins, leading Maryland in kills in 29 of their 32 matches, posting over 20 kills in eight different matches throughout the season and double-digit kills in 27 of 32 matches. In the last week of the season at Iowa (11/23), Pritchard tallied the most kills by a Maryland player since at least 2010 with 31, including six in the fifth set, leading the Terps to their ninth road win of the season. Pritchard also had 20 kill performances in three set victories at Indiana (10/21) and against Iowa (10/28), at 6.67 per set.
The defense was there from Pritchard as well this season, often attacking from the back row. Pritchard had 14 matches with over 10 digs, including a career-best 19 against South Carolina (9/8). With 14 double-doubles on the season, Pritchard had the most in a single-season by any Terp since at least 2010.
Early in the season, Pritchard was named the Akron Invitational MVP after an incredible weekend which featured a double-double in all three matches by way of 56 kills (5.60 per set), 35 digs and nine blocks.
With this honor, Pritchard becomes Maryland's first player to earn First Team recognition since the Terps entered the conference in 2014 and Maryland's first player to receive a place on the First Team in the Big Ten or ACC since 2005.
Senior defensive specialist/libero Abigail Bentz was named Maryland's Sportsmanship Award Honoree. Bentz was a captain on this year's team, playing in all but two matches this season, totaling 166 digs. Bentz is also the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Comittee.
The 2018 Volleyball All-Big Ten team consists of 27 student-athletes from the conference, 18 on the First Team and nine on the Second Team. Samantha Seliger-Swenson of Minnesota was named the Big Ten Player of the Year.
