Maryland Tackles Energy Waste in XFINITY Center

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland's XFINITY Center, the largest sports arena in the state of Maryland, recently upgraded its energy efficiency efforts to the latest technology by Keewi Inc., which empowers the building's occupants to reduce electricity waste.

This is an exciting development for XFINITY Center,” said Associate AD for Facilities, Operations and Events Joshua Kaplan. “We've always looked for ways to reduce the environmental footprint of XFINITY Center, and the Keewi technology will lead us in this effort.”

XFINITY Center is the workplace of numerous staff members including coaches, administrative personnel and athletics operators. Electronic appliances in the building are estimated to draw close to 30-percent of the building's electricity use, and about 50-percent of this draw is estimated to be wasted when equipment is left plugged in overnight and on weekends.

Maryland Athletics has partnered with Keewi Inc. to give staff at XFINITY Center an easy way to eliminate electricity waste using the Keewi energy app on their phones. Each participant received smart plugs at their workstations that collect energy data and can be used to programatically turn off equipment when unused.

This is a new age in energy efficiency where every individual can easily take actions to reduce energy waste,” said Jennifer Tsau, Chief Executive Officer of Keewi. “We're very excited to have this opportunity to partner with Maryland Athletics in helping them reduce the environmental footprint of their famed sports arena.”

The Keewi project at XFINITY Center is an example of efforts in response to the President's Energy Initiatives Implementation plan. The University adopted the Climate Action Plan in 2009 when UMD pledged to reduce total electricity consumption by 20-percent by 2020 through infrastructure upgrades and behavior change initiatives. The Keewi project, especially, addresses the University's dedication to at least a 5-percent reduction in energy use via behavioral programs through education and awareness of individuals' footprints.

XFINITY Center is the first Big Ten athletics facility to take this step towards improving sustainability. Maryland Athletics joins an elite group of innovative institutions such as Stanford University, University of California at Davis and Los Angeles Unified School District to bring people into the energy conservation equation.
