BERKELEY, Calif. – The fourth-ranked Maryland field hockey team beat California, 5-0, Sunday in Berkeley in a match the Terrapins controlled from the start.

The Terrapins (2-0) won their second of three games in their West Coast trip behind two goals apiece from junior
Nike Lorenz and senior tri-captain
Linnea Gonzales.

"We are just super pleased with our bench production and our field goals after today's match," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "We scored three goals off of penalty corners, but two from the field and we created those opportunities. It was great to see
Noelle Frost start in goal and have both goalies gain experience this trip."

In the 24
th minute, Lorenz scored off a penalty corner to break the scoreless game. Seniors
Sabrina Rhodes and
Julie Duncan assisted on the play. Maryland led 1-0 at half.

Just over three minutes into the second half, sophomore
Sophie Giezeman added the Terps' second goal when she deflected in a shot off a penalty corner for her first career score.

Five minutes later, in the 44
th minute, Lorenz added her fifth goal of the season off another penalty corner, this time assisted by Rhodes and redshirt freshman
Mayv Clune.

Gonzales scored twice in the final five minutes. With 4:45 remaining, she knocked in a shot from the right post to make it a 4-0 Maryland lead. Forty three seconds later, she broke loose for a one-vs-one shot and buried it, finalizing the score at 5-0.

Maryland outshot Cal (1-1), 17-5, and had 10 penalty corners to zero. Goalkeeper
Noelle Frost made her first career start, picking up two saves in her 70 minutes in goa.

Maryland was tabbed as the No. 4 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches Preseason poll released Aug. 21. The Terrapins have started the year in the top 10 in each of the last 20 years, since 1999.

After their weekend swing in California, the Terrapins will return home to host No. 3 Duke, No. 12 Northwestern and No. 13 Boston College in the Big Ten/ACC Cup Labor Day Weekend. The Terps will play the Eagles Friday at 7 p.m. and the Blue Devils Sunday at 2 p.m.
