Terps Fall to Temple Friday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple's Emma Wilkins scored the game's only goal in the 38th minute as host Temple secured a 1-0 win over Maryland Friday evening. The Terps outshot the Owls 17-6 contest, but couldn't convert as the squad moves to 2-2-1 on the year.

Neither team was producing chances early in the contest at the Temple Sports Complex, until Maryland earned its first corner kick in the 33rd minute. Hope Lewandoski bended a ball into the box from the left side, which made its way in from of Emily McNesby. McNesby knocked a hard hit shot towards the net, but a Temple defender was there to step in front and deflect the ball wide.

Lewandoski was a catalyst for the Terps all night, recording a season-high six shots while putting herself in scoring position play after play. One of her better chances came in the 65th minute on a shot deep from the right wing, which ricocheted off the crossbar to bail out the Owl goalkeeper.

She had another promising attempt in the 80th minute, after crashing the box and putting her head on a cross. The ball sailed wide out of bounds, but the Terps continued to pressure the hosts down the closing minutes of the half. Despite a 10-2 edge in shots in the second half and an advantage in possession, the Terps came up short to drop their second game of the season.

UMD returns to action this Sunday, September 2 for a road matchup with Drexel at 2:00 pm.
