PRINCETON, N.J. – The third-ranked Maryland field hockey team (9-0) will battled back from a three-goal deficit to top No. 5 Princeton, 5-4, Tuesday night in double overtime at the Tigers' Bedford Field.
The Terps scored three unanswered goals in the final 21 minutes of regulation, including one by freshman
Bibi Donraadt with 15 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Junior
Nike Lorenz buried the game-winner in the 82
nd minute.
"This was just outstanding. It's a matter of believing," head coach Missy Meharg. "This is the type of match where you talk about this when you're playing for championships. You experience everything. From being up, being down, pulling the goalie, tying the game, overtime. It's just great to experience all of these things early in the year."
Sophomore
Kyler Greenwalt wasted no time putting the Terrapins on the board when she took a pass from junior
Madison Maguire, turned and sent a high shot into the net just 1:36 into the match.
Princeton (5-3) tied the game just over five minutes later when Clara Roth deflected in a shot. Roth struck again for the Tigers in the 19
th minute and gave them the lead at 2-1 when she scored off a shot by Hannah Davey.
In the 29
th minute, Princeton's Jane Donio-Enscoe took a pass from Roth to make it a two-goal lead for the Tigers with 6:49 left in the first half. The Terps trailed 3-1 at the break.
Princeton's Julianna Tornetta added the Tigers' fourth goal when she converted a penalty shot 25:05 left in regulation.
Just under five minutes later, junior tri-captain
Kelee Lepage jumpstarted Maryland's scoring flurry when she scored off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner with 20:59 to go.
Senior
Sabrina Rhodes cut the Tigers' lead to 4-3 when she deflected in a shot by sophomore
Brooke DeBerdine with 13:06 to play.
Maryland pulled senior goalkeeper
Sarah Holliday from goal in favor of a kicking back with 4:05 to go. Donraadt tied the match with 15 seconds left when she deflected in a shot for the tie.
Maryland got a penalty corner and a shot off in the first 10-minute overtime, but didn't convert. Lorenz sealed the win for the Terrapins when she took the ball off a penalty corner, dribbled to the left side and scored just 1:27 into the second overtime.
The Terrapins took 19 shots to Princeton's seven. They did not allow the Tigers a shot in either overtime period.
Senior tri-captain
Linnea Gonzales and Lorenz are leading Maryland with eight goals apiece. Maryland has eight scorers with multiple goals and 12 total Terps have found the goal line.
At 9-0, Maryland is off to its best start since 2013 when it started 15-0.
Princeton head coach Carla Tagliente played at Maryland from 1997-00. Assistant coach
Dina Rizzo played at Maryland with Tagliente and graduated in 2002. Rizzo was associate head coach at Maryland from 2010-15. They were both NFHCA All-Americans and helped the Terrapins to the 1999 NCAA title.
Next, the Terps will return home to College Park to host two Big Ten matchups this weekend at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. They will welcome No. 22 Ohio State (4-4, 0-1) Friday at 4 p.m. and No. 10 Michigan (5-3, 1-0) Sunday at noon.
Admission for both games is free. Parking is free after 4 p.m. on Friday and all day Sunday. Fans planning to park before 4 p.m. Friday should park in the metered lot XVL across from the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Terrapins will celebrate LGBTQ Pride Day at Friday's game. Maryland will also welcome field hockey alumni back this weekend and will honor the 2008 NCAA Championship team at Sunday's contest. Prior to Sunday's game, the Terrapins will host a pregame clinic.
