
Terps Sweep Colgate, Fall in Five Set Thriller to South Carolina

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Playing at the XFINITY Center Pavilion for the first time in 2018, the Maryland volleyball team swept Colgate (25-22, 25-14, 22-17) before falling in a five-set thriller to South Carolina (23-25, 30-32, 25-18, 25-22, 10-15) on Saturday.
Freshman middle blocker Rainelle Jones and senior outside hitter Liz Twilely starred in the win over the Raiders with a combined 16 kills and seven blocks.
In the evening affair, Maryland got contributions from all over. Sophomore outside hitter Erika Pritchard recorded a career-best and team-high 19 digs to go with 20 kills, senior outside hitter Liz Twilley notched 17 kills, sophomore setter Nicole Alford tied a career-best with 50 assists and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Katie Myersfilled up the stat-sheet with 12 kills, six blocks and five service aces. Myers totaled 12 blocks on the day.
"Obviously disappointed with the loss there against South Carolina," said head coach Adam Hughes. "I thought it was a pretty good match as a whole, it was a back and forth event. We'll get back to work tomorrow and see if we can take care of business to go 2-1 on the weekend."
COLGATE
Maryland held Colgate to an .086 hitting percentage while tallying a season-best 11 blocks as three Terps totaled over eight kills in a three-set victory over the Raiders.
Pritchard tallied nine kills and seven digs, Twilley notched eight kills and four blocks while Jones managed eight kills and three blocks to lead the way. Alford led with 29 assists while freshman libero Allegra Rivas totaled 14 digs.
The first set was the most tightly contested of the three with Maryland taking an early six-point lead off strong play at the net by Jones. Colgate battled back to tie the score at 19 before Jones, yet again gave the Terps a kill. Tied at 22, kills by sophomore middle blocker Jada Gardner and Twilley, both assisted by Alford helped close out the set.
Colgate committed 10 errors in the second set to lead the Terps to a 25-13 victory. Myers blocked three Raider attempts and Twilley posted four kills.
To close out the match, Pritchard came up big with five kills in the third set while Alford had 11 of her 29 assists. The Terps notched 19 digs led by Rivas' six to limit the Colgate attack.
SOUTH CAROLINA
In a match where every single set was tightly contested, the Maryland volleyball team battled back from two sets down to tie the match at two before falling in the fifth set to drop the match, 3-2, to the Gamecocks.
Pritchard and Twilley combined for 37 kills while Pritchard dug a career-best 19 balls. Alford tallied her third double-double of the season with a career-high in both assists (50) and digs (15). Rivas also dug a career-best 19 balls while Myers was all over the stat-sheet with 12 kills, six blocks and five service aces.
Maryland dropped the first two sets by two points each time. In the first set, Pritchard started off strong with seven kills on a .778 hitting percentage and five digs but Maryland couldn't overcome a 5-0 Gamecocks run with the set tied at nine. Down 22-16, Myers led Maryland on a 4-0 run with two aces and a kill but with the score tied at 23, South Carolina took the last two points of the set.
Neither team led by more than three points throughout the entire second set and after the Terps led 5-2, neither led by more than two points. Maryland and South Carolina both traded points with the match tied at 21 all the way to 30 before the Gamecocks ended the set. Each team had three set points before the Gamecocks closed it out at 32-30.
The Terps went on an 11-4 run with the score tied at 12 in the third set to take the advantage to a 25-18 set win to pull within one set in the match. Twilley led the way with four kills in the set while Maryland had four blocks as a team, three by Myers.
Maryland evened the match in the fourth set. The Terps used the momentum of the third set, taking a 7-2 lead off two kills from Twilley. South Carolina battled back to even the score at 12 but Maryland took the next three points once again credit to Myers and Twilley. The Terps took their biggest lead off the set off a Jones kill to make it 23-18 before tying the match at two, 25-22.
Once again, Maryland started off well in the decisive fifth set, winning four of the first five points off kills by Twilley and Myers. South Carolina went on a service run to come back and take an 11-6 lead. In a set of runs, Maryland responded with their own, scoring the next four points from three kills by Pritchard and one by Jones to cut it to 11-10. The Gamecocks had the last run of the match, winning the last four points to take set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

The Terps, now 6-2 on the season, will close out the Maryland Invite tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. against Liberty at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
