COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Katie Bam has been promoted to associate head coach of the highly-successful Maryland field hockey team, head coach Missy Meharg announced Monday.
Bam, a two-time Olympian, played for the Terrapins from 2007 through 2010, spent the 2012 season with the program as a student assistant coach, then rejoined the staff as assistant coach for the last two years.
Over Bam's time as a student-athlete and coach, the Terps won the 2008 and 2010 NCAA Championships, made five total NCAA title game appearances and won eight conference titles. In her Maryland playing career, Bam was a four-time First Team All-American, four-time ACC Player of the Year and won the Honda Sports Award twice.
"It's been a coaching honor to work alongside Katie for the past two seasons," Meharg said. "She is technically world-class, most specifically in goal scoring and counter defense in the front third of the field. She spent 12 years with our U.S. Women's National Team. Our No. 16, known as 'The Burglar' brought pure excitement in front of the goal cage.
"The cycle with Katie has been fun. From a Maryland recruit to an NCAA champion, All-American, Honda Award winner, a World Cup participant and a two-time Olympian to now working together as associate head coach brings the Maryland cycle full circle."
Over the past two seasons with Bam as an assistant coach, the Terrapins made back-to-back runs to the NCAA Championship game, picked up eight wins over top-five teams and won the 2018 Big Ten regular season and tournament championships.
"I am honored to be associate head coach of a program as high-caliber as the Maryland field hockey program," Bam said. "Missy has built this program on values of hard work, passion, grit and a love for each other and I am thrilled to continue to be a part of it.
"Since I came to College Park as a young freshman almost 12 years ago, this place has felt like home. This school has done so much for me and helped me chase my dreams. I can't wait to continue to help many young women do the same, on and off the field."
