Maryland Handles Rutgers in Four Sets

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The University of Maryland volleyball team wrapped up its weekend road trip with a four-set win at Rutgers, finishing up the weekend 1-1 and looking ahead to a tough Indiana team which the Terps will play Wednesday.

Despite losing the first set to Rutgers in the historic College Avenue Gym, Maryland played an overall solid match, outperforming the Scarlet Knights in nearly every statistical category – except blocks, which the Terps finished with one less. As the set scores show, the Terps got better as the night went on, ending the match with its most lopsided set win of the Big Ten season.

As she did the night before in State College, Erika Pritchard led Maryland's offensive attack, leading the team with 14 kills and 11 digs, her third consecutive double-double and her seventh of the season.

Katie Myers led the Terps in service aces (3) and blocks (5), while Samantha Snyder set a team-high 21 assists with Nicole Alford right behind her with 19.

Maryland hit at its best clip (.268) of the Big Ten season, committing its second-least attack errors (18) in the same span.

SET-BY-SET

  • SET ONE (RU, 25-23) Maryland got off to a relatively sluggish start, quickly falling in a 4-1 hole and allowing the home team to gain some early momentum. Maryland took advantage of attack errors to stay in the mix, but Rutgers got out to a 22-20 lead, withstood a late Maryland rally, and won just its second set of Big Ten play this season.
  • SET TWO (UMD, 25-23) The Terps again started slow, never falling behind by more than three points, but also never gaining momentum or making a run in the set. Myers and Pritchard were the main contributors on offense, but Rutgers errors were the deciding factors and were what put them away late.
  • SET THREE (UMD, 25-19) Maryland finally seemed to be playing much more inspired in the third set, jumping out immediately to a 10-3 lead which later turned into a 15-8 advantage. The Scarlet Knights looked surely out of it but rallied and closed the gap to just four points. A Maryland timeout regrouped the squad with a 23-19 lead and a kill and an ace from Myers gave the Terps its second-consecutive set win.
  • SET FOUR (UMD, 25-11) The Terps again looked hot out of the gates in the fourth, quickly finding itself with a 10-4 lead. Maryland showed its discipline offensively and committed just two attack errors in the set, while Rutgers struggled to get anything going. The Scarlet Knights allowed back-to-back four point Terrapin runs, while a Rutgers service error at March point gave the Terps a win.
