COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland has earned an institutional Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 85 percent, increasing by one percentage point from 2018. It marks the 10th consecutive year Maryland is above 80 percent.
The Graduation Success Rate is a four-year measure of freshmen and transfer student-athletes who entered the University of Maryland between the fall of 2009 and the spring of 2013. It does not penalize the institution for those student-athletes who transfer from Maryland in good academic standing. In addition, the GSR includes student-athletes who transfer into the institution and receive athletics aid.
"We continue to be proud of our student-athletes' commitment to their academic success," said Dr. Sue Sherburne, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Student Development. "We appreciate the opportunity to assist them and be a resource as they work towards earning meaningful degrees and prepare to become leaders in their local and global communities."
Women's basketball, field hockey and volleyball posted perfect GSR scores with 100 percent. The football program earned a GSR score of 84 percent, tying the program-high that was set last year and remained higher than the NCAA FBS aggregate of 79 percent, as well as the NCAA Division I aggregate of 78 percent.
Twelve sports equaled or improved their GSR score with men's basketball making the biggest improvement of nine percentage points. Women's basketball, football, women's cross country/track and field, field hockey, women's soccer, and volleyball all reported GSR scores equal to or higher than their respective NCAA Division I aggregate.
The GSR scores are separate from the NCAA's Academic Performance Rates (APR), which will be released in the spring 2020 semester.
