ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior Madison Maguire and freshman Emma DeBerdine of the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team (15-2, 7-1 B1G) both earned weekly Big Ten honors Monday.
Maguire was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. DeBerdine was named Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Maguire had a stellar Senior Day as she led the Terps to a dominant win and at least a share of their fifth Big Ten title in six years. She scored three goals for her second career hat trick. She added an assist for a career-best 7-point game.
Maguire scored her first of the game just 6:06 into the match when she grabbed a loose ball and slammed it into the bottom of the cage for the 1-0 win. In the 33rd minute, she sent a shot towards the far post and Mayv Clune deflected it in to make it a 3-0 game just before halftime. Just 5:24 into the third quarter, she scored the Terps' fourth goal. She added her third goal and the final goal of the night when she took a ball from fellow senior Kelee Lepage and sent in a rocket shot with under 7:00 to play.
DeBerdine scored on her only shot of the game to help the Terps to the victory. With 2:24 left in the second quarter, she grabbed a loose ball off a rebounded shot and sent it in for the score and a 2-0 lead.
With the win, the Terrapins finished 7-1 in Big Ten play. They clinched the No. 1 seed and first round bye in the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 7-10 at Penn State. Maryland has won 26 conference titles, including the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 titles since joining the Big Ten.
Next, the Terrapins will play across town at American (10-4) Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Eagles' William I Jacobs Recreational Complex in Washington, D.C. The Terps-Eagles game will be streamed online HERE. Live stats will be available here.
