Hughes Signs Three to 2020 Recruiting Class

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland volleyball team welcomes three standout recruits to the class of 2020 as Sydney Dowler, Samantha Csire, and Laila Ricks signed on Wednesday to attend Maryland and play volleyball for the Terps, head coach Adam Hughes announced.

"National Signing Day is a significant look in to the future of our program," Hughes said. "This group is a great continuation of the culture we're building at Maryland. We've got some exciting student athletes and really good people coming in, and our team and coaching staff can't wait for them to get to College Park."

Dowler, a Cary, North Carolina native, is a Third Team Under Armour All-American, four-time state MVP, and three-time Max Preps All-American setter out of Green Hope HS. Dowler was a member of the USA Volleyball Select National Training Camp in 2014 and 2015, and a member of the USA Volleyball A1 Training Camp in 2016. The 2020 Prep Volleyball Senior Ace (#63) was also the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018.

"I chose Maryland because the moment I stepped onto campus, everything about it felt like home," Dowler said. "The school itself is beautiful and the atmosphere that everyone and everything from the school brought to me was so fun and seemed like the place I could call home."

Csire, a native of Strongsville, Ohio, and also a 2020 Prep Volleyball Senior Ace (#65), was named Second Team All-Ohio in 2018 and district/conference MVP the same season. Most recently, Csire was named to the 2019 JVA All-National team, a distinction she also earned in 2017.

"I wanted a campus that was big, but not too big," Csire said. "I wanted to be located near a city and not too far from home. I wanted to play volleyball in a place where every game was high-level competition and had a great atmosphere. The University of Maryland meets all my needs and I'm so excited to be there in 2020."

Ricks comes to Maryland after a four-year varsity career at nationally-ranked high schools Flint Hill (Oakton, Va.) and Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.). Ricks also played with nationally-ranked clubs Mizuno Long Beach and Metro VBC. Another 2020 Prep Volleyball Senior Ace (#70), Ricks helped Redondo Union to the 2019 CIF Southern Section Championship.

"I can't wait to get to College Park and become a Terp," Ricks said. "I get along extremely well with all my teammates and other commits in my class and we all have a great bond. As one of the best options for me academically, Maryland will also get me where I want to go off the court."
