LEXINGTON, Ky. – Maryland redshirt sophomore middle blocker Katie Myers has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-North Region team, the association announced Tuesday.
Myers, who became the program's second-ever First Team All-Big Ten honoree last week, becomes the 16th player in school history to earn AVCA All-Region honors. The Westerville, Ohio native is now eligible for the AVCA All-America Teams, which will be announced next week.
The redshirt sophomore had a breakout season in her second year of full health, ranking first on the team in hitting percentage (.395), aces/set (0.38), and blocks/set (1.29), all marks that ranked among the top five of the conference. Myers was one of only two players in the Big Ten to rank among the top five in all three categories (Dana Rettke, Wisconsin).
Myers excelled in nearly every aspect of the game – posting dominant numbers on the attack, at the service line, and up front at the net. She was clinical on the attack, setting the second-best single-season hitting percentage in program history (.395), which ranked fourth in the conference. She also excelled at the service line, leading the team with 46 total aces and 0.39 aces/set, ranking second and third in the Big Ten, respectively.
The 6-foot-2 former Under Armour High School All-American emerged as one of the Big Ten's premier blockers during the 2019 campaign, ranking first in the conference with 156 total blocks and becoming the only player at a power five institution to record more than nine blocks in five matches on the season.
The AVCA All-North Region team consists of 14 players from seven different schools. 12 of the 14 student-athletes on the team are from the Big Ten as is the Freshman of the Year (Madi Kubik, Nebraska) and the Coach of the Year (Hugh McCutcheon, Minnesota).
