ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Virunpat Olankitkunchai of the Maryland women's golf team was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the league's head coaches Tuesday afternoon.
Olankitkunchai finished tied for fifth and was named to the All-Big Ten Championship Team Sunday. She is the fourth Terrapin to earn All-Big Ten honors under head coach Diana Cantu.
Olankitkunchai and junior Xiaolin Tian entered Sunday's second and final round in the Big Ten Championship just one stroke over par and two strokes off the individual lead. Both shot a 73 in the first round Friday, then Saturday's second round was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Olankitkunchai shot a 69 Sunday and finished with a score of 142, which was two strokes under.
She picked up her sixth top 10 finish on the year. Olankitkunchai's career scoring average is 72.61, which is currently the lowest in program history. That mark breaks the record set by Tian, another Diana Cantu recruit, last season at 73.08.
Olankitkunchai finished second in back-to-back events, the Princess Anne Invitational and the Cardinal Cup, last fall. She set her career-best 18-hole score of 65 and 54-hole score of 206 this year as well.
The NCAA Women's Golf Championships selection show will air on the Golf Channel on Wednesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET.
