COLLEGE PARK Md. – The Maryland women's golf team earned a bid to the NCAA Auburn Regional, its first NCAA Regional bid as a team since 2012.
The Terps received a 13-seed in the Auburn region and will be playing at the Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala. The Regional will be take place May 6 – 8 to determine who advances to the championship field. The low six teams and three individuals not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
The national championships will be May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas hosted by the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
This will be the fifth all-time trip to regionals for the Terrapins and a first for head coach Diana Cantu.
"It was emotional seeing our name up there on the screen," Cantu said. "It's just a production of a lot of hard work. We haven't been in the spotlight very much, but these girls have worked very hard and not just this year, but since I got here, to get us to where we are now. Our rankings have improved over 80 spots since my first year at Maryland. This is just a lot of hard work and dedication and wanting to represent our school as best as we can, and I am just really happy for them and we are going to work really hard these two weeks to head to Auburn and have a great week."
Last weekend, Terps finished 8th of 14 in the Big Ten Championships. Sophomore Virunpat Olankitkunchai finished tied for fifth and was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and All-Big Ten Championship Team.
Junior Xiaolin Tian earned an individual bid to the NCAA Regional in Austin last May.
