
Terrapins End Season at Athens Regional

ATHENS, Ga. – The Maryland gymnastics team earned a 194.650 to place fourth in the second session of NCAA Regionals. This was the Terrapins ninth regionals appearance under current head coach Brett Nelligan and third appearance since joining the Big Ten.
Oklahoma won Regionals with a score of 198.300 and followed by California with a 196.750. The two teams advance to the regional final Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
The Terps posted scores of 49.050 on vault, 48.950 on uneven bars, 48.250 on balance beam, and 48.400 on floor exercise.
"I'm really proud that the team continued to fight beginning to end," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "When you look at the work, we've done this year this is going to be right up there as one of our best years in program history."
Maryland started regionals off on floor, where junior Kirsten Peterman led the squad off with a 9.725 while sophomores Audrey Barber and Sabriyya Rouse followed with 9.825s. Senior Alex Robinson anchored the GymTerps with a 9.775.
The Terrapins returned to Olympic order in the second rotation with vault, their best event of the competition. Barber and junior Alecia Farina led the team in the event with 9.850s followed by junior Emma Johnson and freshman Alexsis Rubio who both notched 9.800s. The team closed out the event with a 49.050, one of Maryland's highest vault scores of the season.
The Terps transitioned to bars for their next rotation. Sophomores Emilie LeBlanc and Barber both earned 9.850s and followed by a strong performance from junior Tiara Wright.
The Terrapins ended the meet on beam where they were led by Barber and LeBlanc who both earned 9.000s.
"The important thing is that we walked out of the coliseum today with our heads held high and we were united as a team," said Wright.
Maryland gymnastics proved themselves to be competitors throughout the season by claiming 17 wins and finishing the 2019 campaign with a 8-1 record at home.
