The Terps traveled to Iowa to compete in the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Championship this weekend. The three-day competition began Friday morning, as the Terps carried out several outstanding performances.
Xahria Santiago ran strong from the start in the 400 meter hurdles, winning her heat in 58.75 which makes her an automatic qualifier for Sunday's finals.Â
Thaila Cooper ran 1:00.19 to finish 13
th in the prelim standings and
Nadia Hackett finished 14
th in 1:00.60.
Alexandra Lucki took the lead from the gun in her heat of the 1500m to win the heat and secure a qualification for Sunday's finals. Lucki's time was 4:21.45. Teammate,
Christine Laurie crossed the line in 4:31.74 and
Yasmine Kass ran 4:43.27.
William Jones raced the prelims of the men's 1500m. Jones posted a time of 4:01.04 in the tactical race.Â
In the 200m dash,
Bria Mack,
Jaida Smith and
Imani Gray all started off their weekend in the longer of their sprint events. Mack and Smith will come back in the 100m dash on Saturday.Â
Cameron Vereen ran the men's 200m and sprinted to a 21.89 finish. Vereen will also come back in the 100m dash Saturday.
In field events,
Alice Barnsdale used her strength to throw one of her top performances of the season in the hammer throw (60.74m). Barnsdale placed 9
th with this toss. Teammate
Bayli Smith finished 20
th with a throw of 51.17m.Â
Lillian Hill finished 13
th in the javelin throw with a 41.57m toss.
The evening races were capped off with
Patrick Hanley and
Kathryn Gearhart tackling 25 laps in the 10K event. Hanley finished 14
th in the men's 10,000m race running 30:37.51. Gearhart set a new personal best in the women's 10k posting a time of 35:07.77.Â
On Saturday, the Terps will start off the day in the men's long jump and will progress through the additional sprint, field, and distance events.
