COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland field hockey and men's track & field teams were honored with the President's Cup at the 2019 Terp Awards last week at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. The award is given to the women's and men's programs with the highest team GPA.
The field hockey team put 12 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten list and 11 were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. Freshman Bibi Donraadt and junior Nike Lorenz were named an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction.
Lorenz was also named the NFHCA National Scholar Athlete of the Year as the All-American with the highest GPA. Junior Hannah Bond won the Elite 90 Award at the Final Four in November as the player at the Final Four with the highest GPA. The Elite 90 recognizes a player for reaching the pinnacle of academic and athletic success.
"Our team has always been focused on achieving high standards both on and off the field," Bond said. "Our team culture promotes hard work and representing Maryland the best we can. We believe that this includes our academics as well as in our sporting performance."
As a team, the Terrapins were named a National Academic Squad by the NFHCA. They posted a GPA above 3.0 to earn the honor. The Terrapins won the President's Cup in 1998.
"The women take great pride in their academic performance," head coach Missy Meharg said. "This plays a huge role in our hockey IQÂ and ability to adhere to the game plans. These special Terrapins strive to be the best of the best in every way."
