Assistant Media Relations Director

The Assistant Media Relations Director is responsible for serving as the sports information director and media contact for several programs as assigned. Responsible for creating and maintaining strong relationships with local and national media, staff, coaches and other external organizations. Cultivate media coverage for assigned teams through all mediums. Respond to and manage media requests, interviews, news conferences and photo sessions. Enhance social media presence and digital storytelling in creative ways. Strategically position Maryland Athletics by developing and writing positive profiles, both in news and feature form, on the athletic teams, student-athletes and coaches. Prepare game notes and press release to ensure effective coverage and proper NCAA and Conference reporting; Maintain historical records, statistics and photographs among other important department information. A team player, the Assistant Media Relations director will collaborate with other units to ensure consistency and cohesion in messaging and communication. Will also be available to assist other members of the media relations team when called upon. Provide event coverage and game-day management functions. Responsible for press box and media game management, credential process, sport fan correspondence, and post-game press availability. Potential to supervise student intern(s), overseeing their work promoting their assigned sports through the media, on umterps.com and through social media channels. S/he will also ensure events are properly staffed, records and bio information are current, and stats are provided in a timely manner and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required in Journalism, Communications or related field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the degree. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of post-graduate experience working within a collegiate athletics media relations department or with a professional team. Must have professional experience in sports writing and copy editing, public relations and media relations. The individual should be an outstanding internal & external communicator who has worked within a high functioning team of content creators. Relationship building and critical thinking are essential. Must be able to work under pressure to manage tight deadlines while juggling multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Must be available and willing to work a flexible work schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
