Samuels, Myers Named B1G Outstanding Sportsmanship Honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sarah Myers of the Maryland women's basketball team and Andrew Samuels of the Maryland men's soccer program were named the Terrapins' Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners in a release made by the conference offices Wednesday afternoon. The Big Ten recognized one male and one female student-athlete from all 14 member institutions for demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and competitive spirit.

Both Samuels and Myers earned this league honor after winning the James H. Kehoe Awards at the 2019 Terp Awards, given to one male and female student-athlete who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship.

A native of Cumming, Ga., and a member of SAAC, Myers graduated with a degree in kinesiology in just three years. Myers earned Academic All-Big Ten honors twice and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She served as a community outreach liaison for SAAC and earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award earlier this year for women's basketball. She was named this year's James H. Kehoe Award female recipient.

Samuels is a native of Tampa, Fla. and graduated with his degree in economics in three and a half years. He served as captain of Maryland's 2018 National Championship team, a role he took on during the middle of the season and emerged as a leader during Maryland's late season surge to the title. Samuels won the Big Ten Sportsmanship award for men's soccer for the second consecutive season, going the entire season without picking up a yellow card despite playing defensive midfield and right back. Samuels played 2,139 minutes and started all 23 matches, barely leaving the field in any of them. He earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award earlier this year for men's soccer and was named this year's James H. Kehoe Award male recipient.

The conference also honored each individual sports Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. Maryland's honorees are as follows: Caroline Augelli (cross country), Rachel Egyed (women's soccer), Andrew Samuels (men's soccer), Brett Kulka (football), Olivia Reiter (field hockey), Abigail Bentz (volleyball), Bruno Fernando (men's basketball), Sarah Myers (women's basketball), Deanna Magro (gymnastics), Jewel Smith (indoor track & field), Sam Shoultz (men's outdoor track & field), Alexandra Lucki (women's outdoor track & field), Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka (women's tennis), JoJo McRae (softball), Tim Colanta (men's golf), Laura Van Respaille (women's golf), Louis Dubick (men's lacrosse), Meghan Doherty (women's lacrosse).
