ATHENS, Ga. – Maryland dropped its first game of the 2019 Bulldog Classic Friday evening, falling to Auburn 4-0.
The Terrapins (2-1) managed 11 shots in the game and forced five saves from the Tigers' keeper, but couldn't find the back of the net for the first time this season.
Maryland withstood some early attacking pressure from the Tigers (1-1), fending off pair of corner kicks to keep the game scoreless.
Auburn broke through in the 24th minute, getting a goal from Jessie Gerow before Sarah Houchin followed with another Auburn score just a few minutes later.
The Tigers put an exclamation point on the end of the first half, drawing a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick. Houchin slotted the PK to push the Tiger lead to 3-0 at the break.
Auburn quickly added to its lead at the beginning of the second half, getting another penalty kick opportunity after a yellow card in the box to go up 4-0.
The Terps managed to lock in from then, keeping Auburn at bay while outshooting the Tigers in the second half 8-6.
Maryland will return to action at the Bulldog Classic this Sunday, September 1 when the Terps battle host Georgia at noon. The game will be broadcast on the SECN+.
