COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland volleyball team dropped its Big Ten season opener vs. Ohio State, 3-1, on Wednesday.
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Katie Myers led the way for the Terps nearly across the board, posting a team-high 14 kills, the second-most in her career, and hitting an efficient .370. She also tallied a team-high nine blocks on the night.
Rainelle Jones was also a force offensively, hitting .533 with nine kills on 15 swings, while also posting six blocks. Erika Pritchard tallied eight kills on the night and also contributed eight digs.
Maryland certainly lived up to the Wednesday Night Block Party theme new to BTN this year, posting its second highest team block total of the season with 15. Myers and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Jada Gardner did the brunt of the blocking on the night, with nine and seven blocks respectively.
In the first set, Ohio State jumped to an early 7-1 lead, and later 14-6. The Terps came all the way back to within three points, trailing 22-19, but back-to-back attack errors and a Buckeye ace sealed their fate in the first.
Maryland strung together an impressive second set, leading wire-to-wire and limiting the Buckeyes to a negative attack percentage. In the third set, Maryland fell behind 24-15 and fought off five consecutive match points before ultimately losing the set on an attack error.
The Terps seemed to be in good position to force a fifth set, never trailing in the fourth until the set was tied 19-19, but the Buckeyes remained clutch when it mattered most and won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
Next, Maryland travels to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. The match will be streamed on BTN Plus.
